(Ep.9) MASTER YOUR CIRCADIAN RHYTHM

In my first semester as a fresher, my flatmates saw me as a lazy person. (We were about 6 of us sharing the same 3-bedroom flat). They were right to think that way of me, actually. I would return around 8.30pm from school and while they were just preparing to start reading, I would be preparing to go to bed.

Their perception of me as a lazy student changed when they saw my first result and noticed that I topped my class and that I was within the first class range. Yeah.

What they didn't know

What they didn't know was that, when our lectures closed by 3.30pm, I'd remain in the library alone studying till 8.00pm when the library would be closed before returning home to rest.

So, when they were busy doing other things, I was busy studying in the library for over 4 hours. They just didn't know and I wasn't ready to start explaining to them. It was better to allow my results do the explanations. And the results did explain.

They were better at reading in the night. I was so poor at reading in the night. I would sleep off within minutes if I should sit to read at nights. So, I had no option than to make good use of the day.

I Mastered my Circadian Rhythm

I mastered my circadian rhythm early enough and capitalized on it. And this is one very important secret of academic excellence.

Your circadian rhythm is your sleep/wake pattern over the course of a 24 hour day. This is influenced by genetics, one's environment and previous personal lifestyles.

Some people are better readers at nights while some are better in the day. Master yours and make good use of it. Plan your time accordingly. Don't be carried away by your friend's circadian rhythm.

Circadian Rhythms are Malleable

Circadian rhythms are however, not always rigid. They are malleable. You can influence it and cause it to change over time. You can learn to read at nights over time, if you are not a night reader. You can also learn to read in the day, if you are not a good day reader.

This is important to note, especially when one needs to use both his day and night to meet up with deadlines.

The Bible says, "See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time"; Ephesians  5:16a

Now that you are a student, master your unique circadian rhythm
