(Ep. 20) MAKE YOUR PARENTS PROUD

My dad has always been a very hard man. Yes, he is such an amazing individual but hard. Very hard. The day I saw him almost skip in excitement was both funny and instructive.

License Exam

After returning as a fresh graduate from India, we were told that we would write a license exam in order to be able to practice in Nigeria. The exam day came. We were gathered at the venue in Lagos. We had fellow fresh graduates who had finished from universities in almost all the continents of the world, as well as graduates from Nigeria.

I had written the exam, not as a competition, but just to pass. We were not told that there would be prices or something for the best candidates. So, we wrote the exams. We were told that only those who passed would be contacted to come for the induction.

Induction Day

Induction day came, and I was seated there with my dad by my side. Other candidates had also arrived. Some who wrote the exams were missing at the induction. I later heard that they didn't pass the exam. They would have to re-sit for it.

Before we were sworn in, the Registrar came up in her regalia and said, 'Before we continue, there is someone here who did outstandingly well. We do not usually honour people who come out as the best in our licensing exams, but we want to honour this person because he did outstandingly well'. Everywhere was quiet. I wasn't expecting anything.

She Mentioned the Name

Then she called out the name: 'Onu Tochukwu Benjamin'. Wow, that should be my name, I thought. I wasn't expecting it. Immediately, my 'very hard' dad nearly skipped like a little puppy in excitement. He was so proud. So so happy and proud of his boy. I was equally happy that I made him proud. Also, that day, I instantly became a celebrity, you know. Almost everybody wanted to take a photo with me. What a day!

This is to remind you that you need to make your parents proud. You won't understand fully the sacrifices your parents make to put you through school until you become a parent yourself. Even when the economy is biting hard, they are still doing their best to make sure you go to school.

Make them proud by being studious and diligent in your academics. Make them proud by staying away from the evil and cultism on campus. Make them proud by focusing on what brought you to school. Make them proud by coming out in flying colours.

Make your parents proud. It is wise to do so.

But if you think they don't deserve it, make those who deserve it (including your sponsors, yourself, etc) proud

"A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother"; Proverbs 10:1

Now that you are a student, make your parents proud.
