(Ep. 4) SMARTen YOUR GOALS

People who write down their goals have a higher chance of achieving them than people who do not write them down. However, it's not just about writing them down. In writing down your goals, you must write SMART goals


A SMART goal is a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable/ Attainable, Relevant and Time-Bound


1. Specific

Define clearly what you intend to achieve. Don't say, 'I want to make good grades in my subject'. Rather say, 'I want to make an A in Maths and English'


2. Measurable 

Quantify your goals. Give it a numerical value so that you can be able to measure if you are making progress or not. For example, don't say, 'I'll read my English textbook today'. Rather say, 'I'll read 10 pages (or 2 chapters) of my English textbook today'.


3. Achievable/Attainable

Make your goals realistic. For example, don't say, I will cover the 1000page textbook tonight' or 'I will read 20hours everyday'. That's not a realistic goal. You are simply joking.


4. Relevant

How does the goal you intend to achieve align with your overall goal, your life and values. For example, if your broader goal is to be the best student in Chemistry department, setting a goal to cover all Prof. Soyinka's literary works in the library is not relevant to you broader goal.


5. Time-Bound

Give your goal a time limit. This gives it an urgency. Don't say, "I will finish the 100page novel". Say, "I will read read 10 pages of the novel each day so that in 10 days, I have finished the 100page novel." Or, 'I'll complete the 100page novel before 8pm tonight'


You can break down your goals into smaller sizes to enable you achieve them more easily. You can also review your goals with time. Be flexible but disciplined.


Again, every person who has ever achieved excellence did have goals. Write down your academic goals if you want academic excellence. Also SMARTen the Written Goals.
