(Ep 11) HOW TO START FALLING IN LOVE WITH READING
I've heard so many students complain that reading is so difficult and very uninteresting. I understand. But somehow I don't completely agree.
Reading is actually very interesting and yet not as difficult as you think. There are many ways to make reading very easy. I'll be teaching you these methods subsequently.
Today, I want to show you how to start developing a reading habit. This is because Readers are leaders and reading is one very important key to academic excellence.
How to Start
Now, how do you develop a reading habit? James Clear in his book 'Atomic Habits' gave us simple ways of how to develop any habit. One important strategy he gave is to 'Start small'
Many students are unable to develop a good reading habit because they plan to start reading in a big way.
They want to cover 3hours on their first day of reading and 6hours on the 2nd day. Within 1 week, they have dropped the habit.
Start Small
I want to encourage you to start small and progressively increase the duration.
You could start with some 20-30mins today. Do that for like 2 days, then gradually increase the timing to 40mins, then 50mins, 1 hr, 2 hrs, etc. Start this today.
I once told you to spend 5mins everyday to go through each subject that you are taught today. Keep doing that. Then read deeper for 20-30 mins and progressively increase the duration.
The Law of Inertia
In Physics, there is something called the 'Law of inertia'. Simply put, the law teaches us that it is more difficult to start something but far easier to continue once you have really started.
Starting the process of a reading habit is sometimes more difficult than continuing it. If you really want to continue, you need to make the starting process easier by starting small and then gradually progressing.
The aim is to help you master the habit and fall in love with it. Once you have fallen in love with reading, continuing won't be so much of a problem
"For who has despised the days of small things..."; Zechariah 4:10
Now that you are a student, fall in love by starting small.
