(Ep. 34) How to Use Holidays to Your Academic Advantage

YOU were brainwashed...!

Actually...Yes!

Who told you that holidays translate into no-book days or no-academic-work days? Who told you that?

Now, know this: Holidays are not just a pause for school, but an opportunity to sharpen your sword for the next battle.

In fact, the way you use your holidays can affect your academic performance in the next semester and beyond.

Here are 7 things you can do to make your holidays benefit you academically:

1. Review the Last semester

Take time to think about how well you did last semester. Even if the results may not be out already, you can tell if you did well or not. How well did you achieve your last semester goals. What associations or habits helped you or pulled you back. Do a thorough review.

2. Set a Holiday Goal

Have SMART goals set for this holiday. E.g., complete all the chapters under Organic Chemistry, Finish the 2 novels we would use for next semester, complete an assignment, finish a project, etc. Set as many goals as you can. But not too many. It's holiday remember. Write the goals down.

3. Break Goals into Smaller Bits

Bit-sized goals are easier to pursue than broader goals. Since it's holiday, break your goals into smaller bits. E.g., finish one chapter in the novel each day, etc.

4. Study in a Holiday Friendly Manner

Don't do 10 hours stretch like you did while in session. You could choose a few hours early in the morning, if that works for you. Or study for 45 minutes each with some breaks in between.

The hack here is that this holiday could even help you develop a good academic study habit that will help you when you resume.

5. Learn a skill

Use this holiday to learn a skill. Learn coding, Excel skills, graphics design, other online skills fashion design, car repairs, etc. Don't be ashamed of learning a skill. That could be what will put food on your table when you graduate or even before you graduate.

6. Balance Work and Rest

It's holiday, people. So, rest. Rest again. Have some leisure. See a movie. Go out with families and loved ones. Visit. Eat well. Exercise well. Balance work and leisure.

7. Plan Ahead

It's good to get ready for the new semester. Start preparing your goals for the new semester. Also write down your plans for the new semester/session. Are there habits you want to jettison or new ones you want to imbibe? Note them. Enter the new semester a better prepared person.

Holidays are not for wasting time. This is one secret of best graduating students, like myself (of course). Holiday periods are supposed to be properly invested.

"Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." Galatians 6:7

Now, over to you. What's that one holiday goal you will set TODAY. Drop it in the comments
