(Ep. 41) Building a Solid Academic Foundation from Day One

It's so exciting to be an undergrad!

I know. Yes, I know.

New environment. New friends. New freedom. But with that freedom comes a new level of responsibility — especially when it comes to your academics.

The truth is this: how you start your academic journey often shapes how you finish it. While it's never too late to improve, laying the right foundation from day one gives you a strong advantage.

Now, whether you are a fresher or a staylites (who wants to start doing the right things), here's how how you can build a solid academic foundation from the Day one.

1. Set SMART Academic Goals

What exactly do you want to achieve in school. Decide now and Decide early!

What CGPA do you want? A first class, 2nd class or just a pass(let-my-people-go grade). Do you want to be the best graduating student?

Your goals will determine your habits as a student. A student aiming for a 4.5+ CGPA won't study the same way as someone just trying to “get by.”

Set clear SMART goals. Also, write them down and place them where you’ll see them daily.

2. Master Time Management

University is full of distractions — social events, parties, clubs, outings, unending gists, Netflix, and of course, sleep 😌.

To succeed:
  • Avoid procrastination — reading last-minute is stressful and ineffective.
  • Prioritize tasks — everything cannot be urgent. Learn to say 'No'.

3. Attend Classes — and Pay Rapt Attention

This sounds very simple, but many students struggle with it.

Lectures help you:
  • Understand difficult concepts better
  • Stay consistent and disciplined

Even if slides are shared, showing up gives you insight that notes alone can’t give.

4. Stay Organized

University is not secondary school. You'll handle more work, more deadlines, and more responsibilities.

Stay ahead by:
  • Keeping track of assignments and tests, lecture notes (this makes it easy to study during exams)

Being organized reduces stress and improves performance.

Now, Start by making your bed this morning.😉

5. Develop Strong Study Habits

Smart studying beats long, unfocused studying habits.

Build habits like:
  • Try practicing past questions
  • You could also form or join study groups
Consistency with these habits always pays better than short bouts of Intensity.
Reading small portions daily beats cramming overnight.

6. Balance Academics With Social Life

University is not all about books — but it’s not all about enjoyment either.

Join clubs. Be involved in sports. Attend debates and academic events. Have some extracurricular activities

Make friends, especially those who align with your values. Network. But keep your priorities right.

Shun cultism. Stay away from social activities that are immoral or corrupt your morals.

A balanced university life = success + sanity + memories.

7. Join a Good Campus Fellowship

Do this today. Do it urgently. Your spiritual welfare is of paramount importance.

In fact, a good number of campus fellowships don't focus on only spiritual welfare but also on your academic and all round welfare.

For example, my campus fellowship as a student played a very vital role in spurring me into becoming a first class student and also the best graduating student of my set.

Yes. Watchman Catholic Charismatic Campus Fellowship was indeed a blessing to me.

Truly, having a community of godly friends is so refreshing. This cannot be overemphasized.

Conclusion

Start strong, stay disciplined, and build habits that will carry you through your academic journey and beyond.

Start today. Tomorrow (the future You) will thank you!

  1. With what I have read so far, I am longing to be a first class student, not just that, but I also so want to come out with a good Name, because the bible says that a good name is better than riches.
