(Ep. 43) Understanding University Grades: What Should You Really Aim For?"

This can sometimes sound confusing to students!

I know, especially to Freshers!

You hear people say, ' I'm a first class student/graduate" or a "second class graduate", etc.

What do these grades really mean, and how much do they matter in shaping your future?

Let’s break it down clearly:

NOTE: Not all schools use the 5.0 system. However, most schools, especially in Nigeria use the 5.0 system as provided below.

🥇 First Class Honours (4.50 – 5.00 GPA)

This is the dream of many students — and rightly so. Graduating with a First Class means you have consistently performed at the top level in all your courses.

It reflects excellence, diligence, and strong mastery of your field.

Advantages

  • Opens doors to scholarships, postgraduate opportunities, and top job placements.

  • Commands respect academically and professionally.

  • Builds confidence and discipline.

Remember that if you get an F (Fail) in any course, even if your CGPA is eventually 4.99, you still CANNOT have a first class. So, to make a first class, you must ensure you do excellently well in all your courses.

Avoid engaging in unhealthy competition. Consistency, not pressure, produces results.

🥈 Second Class Upper Division (3.50 – 4.49 GPA)

Often called '2:1' (pronounced as 'Two-One'), this is still a highly respected grade. Many employers and scholarship boards consider this as evidence of strong academic ability and balance.

Advantages:

  • Competitive edge in the job market.

  • Shows that you’re smart and hardworking, even if you didn’t hit the very top.

If you can’t reach First Class, a solid Second Class Upper is an excellent goal.

🥉 Second Class Lower Division (2.40 – 3.49 GPA)

Commonly called '2:2' (pronounced as 'Two-Two'), this grade still reflects a good level of understanding, but with noticeable room for improvement. Many students in this category often juggle multiple responsibilities — part-time jobs, leadership, or personal challenges. However, this should not be an excuse.

Advantages:

  • Still acceptable in many workplaces.
  • Can be improved upon through professional courses, certifications, or postgraduate studies.

Tip:

If you eventually find yourself here, don’t settle. Build skills, gain experience, and stand out beyond your grades.

⚙️ Third Class Honours (1.50 – 2.39 GPA)

This is the lowest class of degree before a pass. It often results from weak consistency, poor time management, or personal struggles during your study period.

However, it’s not the end of life.

History is filled with people who graduated with low grades but rose to become leaders, innovators, and successful entrepreneurs. What matters is your growth mindset — learning from past mistakes and building up from there.

You cannot proceed directly to do your Masters degree with a Third class. You must first do a post graduate diploma (PGD) before you can be eligible to do a Masters. However, those with a First class, 2:1 or sometimes, 2:2, can proceed straight to do their Masters.

🌺 Pass (1.0 to 1.49)

This means that you barely meet the requitement to graduate. You just managed to scale through.

It's usually tagged as 'Let my people go' grade.

This grade is terminal, meaning that you cannot use it to seek further studies...no Masters or PGD. You just answer a graduate and that is all.

😢 Fail (Below 1.0)

This means that you did not meet the requirements to graduate and so, cannot graduate.

You can make up this by improved discipline, better study habits, etc.

💡 So, Which Should You Aim For?

In simple terms — Aim for the best, but prepare for growth.

Strive for excellence (First Class). If you aim for a first class, you most likely will get it or at worse, get a 2:1.

Those making first class do not have 2 heads. The difference is just in their diligence.

In Conclusion

If you aim to make a first class and work towards it, you will get there.

Also, balance your academics with skill development, emotional intelligence, networking, and spiritual growth

In university, grades matter — but they aren’t everything. What matters more is what you learn, how you grow, and who you become in the process. So, go for excellence, not perfection. Strive to be a well-rounded student — academically sound, spiritually grounded, and purpose-driven. 🌟

Grades open doors, but character and competence keep those doors open.

Work hard, stay faithful, and trust God to bless your efforts.

"Do you see a man diligent in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men." — Proverbs 22:29 (NKJV)

Let's meet at the top!
