(Ep. 40) Freshers: What Nobody Tells You About University Life

Congratulations!

You finally made it into the University!

You finally get to wear that 'Undergraduate' badge of honour. Please, wear it with pride. You deserve it.

I'm sure you are so excited. Expectations are high. Pressure is silently mounting.

But before you start imagining university life as a perfect blend of freedom, fun, and “everything will just fall into place,” let’s talk about what nobody really tells you.

Because campus life? It’s a lot deeper than the Nollywood makes it seem.

1. You are Finally Free.πŸ˜ƒ But...

Nobody wakes you up for morning classes. Nobody forces you to read. No parents monitoring your life.

But freedom can be expensive…

Freedom without discipline equals disaster. The difference between thriving and struggling often boils down to time management. Learn to balance enjoyment with responsibilities early.

Tip: Create your own routine. Have a study timetable from Day 1

2. You will Get Home-Sick (Even for Hard Guys)πŸ˜‰

You won’t always admit it, but there are nights you’ll miss home food, your room, your siblings’ noise, even mummy shouting “have you washed plates?” lol.

It’s normal.

University tests your emotional strength as much as your academic strength.

What helps

3. You'll Make New Friends. Some Stay, Some Go πŸ₯Ή

Don’t rush friendships. That first-week “bestie” might disappear by mid-semester. And that quiet person in your hostel could end up being your closest friend.

Let relationships grow naturally.

Not Everyone Will Like You — And That’s Fine

You’ll meet all kinds of personalities. Some will click, some won’t. Don’t lose yourself trying to fit in.

Respect yourself. Find those who share similar values with you. Make friends of God's children

4. Money Finishes Faster Than You ThinkπŸƒπŸƒ

Transport, printing, data, snacks, group assignments, printing again, hostel contributions… Your wallet will understand life before you do.

Tip:

Financial discipline is part of maturity. Get financially literate and matured.

5. Campus is Not for Children. πŸ‘ΆπŸΌ

I get it that you may be less than 18. But that doesn't matter. As long as you are in Campus, you must start being a man/woman.

Stop acting like a child. You are not in secondary school any longer. Children are forced to read, go to class, etc. Children priorities enjoyment over their futures. Matured people take resposibilty and own their lives. They don't give excuses. They focus on their goals here on campus.

Tip: Read my blog "Many Students Fail in Their First Years"

6. You Must Learn to Ask for Help πŸ™

Don't struggle alone. Don't die in silence. Whether it's academics, mental health, or confusion about campus life — ask questions.

Seniors, lecturers, librarians, student counselors — someone is always willing to help.

You can always ask me. If you ask, you will receive help.

7. Campus is a Training Ground. πŸ‹️πŸ‹️‍♀️

University grows you in ways you won’t always notice at first.

Sometimes , you will learn from very difficult situations . See everything that happens as an opportunity to learn.

You get to learn, not just academics, but also confidence, communication, independence, decision-making, self-discovery, etc.

Conclusion

University is a journey — not a race, not a competition, and definitely not a movie. You’ll laugh, sometimes cry, get confused, get excited, and grow.

So dear fresher, take your time, find your rhythm, stay true to your goals make make your parents proud.

And remember that you deserve to be here.

Welcome to university life — now go and make it spectacular πŸ€—

More importantly, in this beginning, remember God

"In the Beginning, God..."; Genesis 1:1a

Let's meet at the top!
