(Ep. 56) How to Pass Your Exams When Time Is Running Out: 8 Practical Strategies

Have you ever found yourself so close to exams and yet not well prepared for the exams? This is such a difficult situation for many students.

Sometimes it's as a result of procrastination, unexpected responsibilities, health challenges, or simply underestimating the amount of work you should cover before the exams

If you find yourself in this situation, do not panic. Even when time is short, it is still possible to prepare wisely and improve your chances of passing your exams. What matters most now is using the little time you have in the smartest way possible.

In this article, I will give you 8 practical strategies that can help you make the most of limited preparation time.

1. Stay Calm and Avoid Panic

The first mistake many students make when time is short is panic. Panic wastes energy and makes it harder to concentrate.

Instead of worrying about how much you have not read, focus on what you can still cover. A calm mind studies faster, remembers better, and thinks more clearly during exams.

Tell yourself: “I will do my best with the short time I have.”

2. Identify the Most Important Topics

When time is limited, you cannot study everything in detail. You must prioritize.

Start by identifying:

Frequently repeated topics in past questions

Key concepts emphasized by your lecturer

Core chapters in your course materials

These areas are often where many exam questions come from. Prioritizing and studying them first gives you a higher chance of scoring marks.

3. Study Actively, Not Passively

Simply reading your notes repeatedly may not be effective when time is short.

Instead:

Summarize key ideas

Write short notes. Write down what you read, even if it means just scribbling it. This tasks your brain to remember

Practice past questions

Test yourself after studying

Active study methods help your brain retain information faster and for longer.

4. Use Past Questions as a Guide

Past questions are one of the most powerful tools when preparing for exams quickly.

They help you:

Understand the exam pattern

Identify common topics that appear in exams

Practice answering questions within time. Set a mock exam for yourself and try answering within the time

Try to solve as many past questions as possible. This will increase your confidence and improve your exam technique.

5. Avoid Distractions

When you have little time, distractions can be very costly.

Reduce activities that waste time such as:

Excessive social media use

Long phone conversations

Unnecessary outings

Create a focused study environment where you can concentrate fully.

You could practice the Pomodoro technique

6. Study in Short, Focused Sessions

Instead of trying to study for many hours without rest, break your reading into shorter sessions.

For example:

Study for 40–50 minutes

Take a 10-minute break

This method helps your brain stay fresh and improves concentration.

7. Take Care of Your Health

Some students try to read all night without sleep when exams are close. While this may seem helpful, extreme fatigue actually reduces memory and concentration.

Ensure you:

Sleep enough, as much as possible.

Eat properly

Drink water

Take short study breaks

A healthy body supports a sharper mind.

8. Pray and Stay Positive

Commit your efforts to God and trust Him to help you remember what you have studied.

However, remember that prayer should be combined with diligent preparation. Work and pray.

Remember to honour God in the exam hall. Stay away from examination malpractices.

In Conclusion

I do not encourage that you cultivate the habit of keeping your books till the last minute before studying.

However, I want you to still remember that running out of time does not automatically mean failure. With the right strategies, discipline, and determination, you can still perform better than you expect.

Focus on the most important topics, study actively, practice past questions, and remain calm. Use the remaining time wisely and give your best effort.

You will come out in flying colours

"And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath..." Deuteronomy 28:13

Let's meet at the top.
